The Art of Living course
The pace of modern living places so many stresses on us. The Art of Living course offers an opportunity to reduce stress and negative emotions, improve your health and wellbeing, heighten your energy and enthusiasm, achieve greater concentration and creativity and improve your self esteem. I first took part in an Art of Living course in 2005. This basic course really changed my life and I became so inspired by the work of the Art of Living foundation that I got involved with setting up courses for the local tutor, Craig Pruess. Now we have regular courses running in Swindon and many local people have experienced great benefits in their daily lives. You do not need to have any previous experience of yoga to take part and the 18 hour basic course is designed to fit around working life. Our normal school education leaves us with few clues for how to handle our minds or our negative emotions. Anger, fear, uncertainty, jealousy, rejection, depression can come at any time and sweep us off our feet, bringing those unwanted health, energy, career and relationship problems. Most people are not aware of their breathing at all unless they climb five flights of stairs or develop asthma. For instance, have you noticed how your mind and emotions affect your breathing? With a burst of anger, or intense physical fear, or even sobbing, see how the breath dramatically changes. Similarly, we have those big heavy outgoing breaths when we are depressed or sad, or the smooth and integrated breathing when content, at peace. Smell a perfumed blossom, or enjoy a fresh mountain stream and observe how our inward breath predominates.... The Art of Living course teaches breathing techniques as effective tools to achieve these qualities, including the powerful Sudarshan Kriya ®, which is known to have beneficial effects on the physiology, nervous system, endocrine system and immune system. We can eliminate over 90% of physical and emotional toxins through the breath. Our breath is directly linked to the mind. If we learn how to skilfully use our breath, our mind gets a deep rest. It is a natural process, which energises and heals our whole system. A stressed mind has the tendency to wander between the events of the past and the worries of the future. The breathing techniques taught on the Art of Living course have the power to bring the mind to the present moment, where clarity, awareness, and peace reside.
