What is Active Birth? Active birth means more than just using upright positions and gravity to assist the birth of your baby.. It means being active in preparing your body and mind for the experience of birth, seeking more advanced knowledge of birth physiology, knowing the things that you and your partner can actively do before and during labour to maximise the chances of having a normal, natural birth experience with as few interventions as possible. During the session we will explore:

  • Effective tools for labour and birth including breathing, relaxation, massage, water,  meditation, guided visualisation, sound, positions and movements
  • Pain relief options from natural remedies to epidurals
  • Understanding birth physiology and how to assist the natural processes and hormones during labour, birth and early bonding
  • How to create an environment at home or in hospital that will optimise the chances of a natural birth
  • How to manage the situation if intervention is necessary (e.g. monitoring, examinations, induction, episiotomy and epidural)

“I attended the Active Birth workshop with my wife Sara not knowing what to expect really! I was adamant from the start that I wanted Sara to have a hospital birth and in my words 'not be brave' just to have an epidural !!! (As she wanted a home birth!) After attending this workshop I completely changed my mind, my wife said I came out a different person! The workshop opened my eyes to all the possibilities available, pros and cons of different drugs, procedures, different stages of labour, etc and now I understand why Sara felt the way she did about doing things naturally.” Andy Brown
